no way! It's the same song only Zep shamefully copped the writing credits instead of doing the ARRANGED by which is the appropriate thing to do. They did it with In my Time of Dying too which is word for word the same as the version on Dylan's first album. Don't know who wrote it but I know it wasn't Zeppelin or Dylan.

I used to hate how Zeppelin stole the credit but then I realized that EVERY single bluesman claims to have written Stagger Lee among others. Of course they didn't make the money they deserved to so somehow I have less of a problem with them doing it.

sure it was. No, they weren't covering the Zep VERSION because Zep didn't do their's until 76 AND I hardly see the Dead being influenced by Led Zeppelin. BOTH bands were covering a traditional blues tune ( or an old one I don't know who actually wrote it ), the SAME one, only Zeppelin claimed to have written it.

I think Blind Willie Johnson wrote that tune - not entirely sure - but his atleast was the inspiration of the dead's version and zep's version - though neither one of those are alike. If i am wrong - someone call me out on this - dont want to spread falsehoods.

i have a four disc set ( a copy though) of old old blues tunes - he is listed as performing and writing that song - dont have the actual liner notes though - so i may be way off base.

Hard to say sometimes - for instance Mississippi John Hurt claims to have written Stagger Lee and CC Rider and so does every blues man who ever played those tunes.

i just googled the song nobody's fault but mine and zep reworked the lyrics, none of the lyrics jerry sang, then again i only have listen to 73 dead nobody's fault, more closely to the way blind melon and earlier blues player sang it,where zep is a rework of the lyrics, both are solid versions.

OK:
Nobody's Fault But Mine

Nobody's fault but mine if I don't read my soul gets lost
Nobody's fault but mine
Had a Bible in my hand, had a Bible in my arm

My mother she taught me how to read
If I don't read my soul gets lost
Nobody's fault but mine, nobody's fault but mine

Zeppelin:

Nobody's fault but mine.

Nobody's fault but mine.

Trying to save my soul in line.

It's nobody's fault but mine.

The rest of theirs aint even close but the point is is that it is obviously based on the same song and the same premise - If you don't beleive that book then you aint " gwine upta heaven" ( Zappa, remember that one? )

Just to muck the water, Beck did a Nobody's Fault which HE wrote. Completely different tune. Not blues

yeah and he did a song called LOSER that isn't the same either. What's up with that? Not to be confused with Cracker's version of LOSER which IS the Hunter/Garcia one and kicks serious ass.

Dave Alvin (of The Blasters) does a great version of Loser on his recent release "West of the West". It's an album of covers from California songwriters. It's a great record with a cool doo-wop rendition of Surfer Girl. The Loser is a pretty faithful rendition with a short but ripping solo. Once at a show one of my buddies yellled out "Dark Star!", and Dave's response was "don't tempt us with the Dark Star". Then he and his band did some fairly Dead-like noodling that went right into the next tune.

sure!!! that would be great - could care less if it is mp3 - sound is all i care about. Have nothing by Cracker so that would be way cool - always love new music/artists.

but before you send that - what can i do for you my friend?? we need to make things copacetic (sp?) - not that either of us care too much - just makes it more fun :)

I'm surprised anyone but Jerry would make any list as a solo artist. Even then let's get real, he wouldn't be making it on his solo MUSIC as much as him being a cultural icon.
